Reinforced concrete slab supported by four cables Figure 9.7.2.3.1.2. A reinforced concrete slab supported by four cables, as shown in Figure 9.7.2.3.1.2, will deform under the thrusting loads depicted in Figure 9.7.2.3.1.1. If the thrusting loads are not distributed uniformly along the slab and are sufficiently high, the slab will deform. Under a uniform distribution of loads, the concrete will deform uniformly and the strains induced will be uniform. If, however, the loads are nonuniform, the concrete will deform unevenly, resulting in nonuniform strains in the concrete. The induced strain is increased if the plastic deformation of the concrete is distributed in a nonuniform manner. The resulting strains will be nonuniform.9 These nonuniform strains, in turn, can cause cracking and other damages. For this reason, the distribution of loads must be uniform in order for the concrete to be damage free. The concrete and steel reinforcement are placed in the formwork, where the forces are transferred to the reinforcement, and then to the slab. If the slab is unevenly distributed along the bottom of the formwork, the concrete will be unevenly distributed along the surface of the slab. As a result, the loads will not be distributed evenly across the slab and thus there will be nonuniform strain distribution. This nonuniform distribution of loads can cause a number of different problems, including unevenness of the surface of the slab and premature onset of failure.
